In the Amur region, the disposal of hundreds of tons of agrochemicals that were stored for many years near the Vostochny cosmodrome has been completed, the Amur Basin Environmental Prosecutor’s Office reported. The remains of the batch, amounting to about 947 tons, were burned in incinerators on the territory of the cosmodrome. It is stated that environmental pollution was avoided.
According to the department, waste (fertilizers that have become unusable due to long-term storage) since the late 1970s was stored in premises on land plots that were subsequently allocated for the construction of facilities at the Vostochny Cosmodrome. In 2017, an appeal ruling was issued by the judicial panel for civil cases of the Amur Regional Court, which ordered the neutralization of hazardous substances, namely pesticides and toxic chemicals.
As Kommersant reported, the authorities of the Amur region made the first attempt to implement the court decision in 2021; the company Sistema LLC from Vladivostok was supposed to destroy the waste. About 200 tons of waste were transported to the Primorsky Territory, but the resonance and indignation of the population led to the introduction of a “high alert regime” in the region (it was canceled on October 13, 2023) and the return of pesticides back to the Amur region. The Amur authorities decided to liquidate the party at an abandoned site near Zavitinsk. The townspeople suffered from odors and smog, contacted to government and judicial authorities, and the disposal work was curtailed ahead of schedule.
According to Kommersant, the contract for the transportation and disposal of the batch is worth over 33 million rubles. was concluded with Amurtrade LLC. Another 5.5 million rubles. was allocated for the equipment of a special site. The environmental prosecutor’s office clarified that the deadline for completing the work was set until November 1.
