Bill Gates criticized workaholism and advised to rest more
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, speaking to students at Northern Arizona University, advised them to find the right balance between work and personal life, writes business insider.
Gates said that in his youth he was mainly engaged in work. And only after many years I realized how important personal life is.
“At your age, I didn’t believe in vacations,” Gates told students.
He also said he “didn’t believe in weekends” and “forced everyone around … to work long hours.” He explained that he did not understand the importance of work-life balance and often watched when his employees left work.
To the young people who listened to him, he said: “You will not be considered a loafer if you allow yourself more rest.”
Gates advised would-be professionals: “Don’t wait as long as I did to learn this lesson.” And he advised me to set aside time to maintain relationships with people, “celebrating successes and recovering from failures.”
“Rest if you need rest,” Gates said. “And don’t pressure people nearby if they need to rest too.”
