Baidu refuses to publicly launch its ChatGPT counterpart and held a private demo

The Chinese company Baidu held a closed presentation of its ChatGPT alternative called ERNIE, justifying this with “high demand”. According to Reuters, Baidu received applications for ERNIE testing from more than 120,000 companies. Baidu plans to hold more such private presentations.
Amid reports of the cancellation of the public launch of ERNIE, Baidu shares fell 4.5%. The previously planned broadcast was supposed to become public, and the bot itself was positioned as open to the media and the public. ERNIE AI bot was unveiled on March 16 – then Baidu CEO Robin Li acknowledgedthat the company’s neural network is still far from perfect. Pre-recorded videos with ERNIE answers were used for the announcement. After an unconvincing presentation, the company’s shares fell 10%.
