In the regular season of the Fonbet Kontinental Hockey League, Avangard beat SKA with a score of 9:5. The Omsk club with 84 points rose to second place in the KHL summary table, ahead of St. Petersburg, who have 83 points. Championship leader Metallurg scored 86 points, defeating Admiral 5:1.
Immediately after the match with Metallurg, Avangard met with another contender for the Continental Cup – SKA. In Magnitogorsk, Omsk rather disappointingly missed out on victory in the last second of regulation time, and with it the opportunity to take first place in the Eastern Conference. Although they still had an advantage in lost points over both Magnitogorsk and the army team from St. Petersburg. The Hawks were one point behind the leader of the Western Conference, despite having played one game less.
Both teams were in optimal condition, and SKA is generally now the hottest club in the league and heads the so-called strength index. Recently, the St. Petersburg team twice defeated the current Gagarin Cup holder CSKA, which is already a common thing for them this season, and they also dealt with their direct competitor in the West, Lokomotiv, and one of the leaders of the East, Salavat Yulaev. Well, Avangard occupies second position in the current power ranking.
The first period began with the Omsk team earning a penalty and it took the guests less than ten seconds to implement it. The championship’s top scorer among defensemen, Alexander Nikishin, rolled the puck under Arseny Gritsyuk’s flick, and he fired it into the top corner. However, the quickly missed goal did not spoil the mood for the hosts – on the contrary, it provoked them even more. And Reed Boucher also made partners when he stood up for his line’s center forward Ryan Spooner, who was brutally beaten on the boards by Ivan Zinchenko. True, as a result of the brawl, the best sniper of the regular season received two penalty minutes more, and the “hawks” again had to fight back in the minority, but they survived, and then Ivan Telegin made a great pass from behind the goal to a nickel, and his namesake Igumnov opened Nikita’s goal Serebryakova.
Moreover, Igor Martynov brought Avangard ahead by running to zero along the left edge and confidently laying out the goalkeeper.
At the end of the first period, SKA still ran into a penalty, which carried over to the next twenty minutes. And only the St. Petersburgers found themselves with five when Tomas Jurcho scored the third goal. The Slovak intercepted the puck with his hand, worked it up and sent it into the net with a wrist shot. Not to say that Serebryakov was to blame for anything, but the head coach of the guests, Roman Rotenberg, decided that it was time to change him. And this move really shook up the army team. In addition, Pavel Moisevich kept her in the game when Martynov jumped out one on one with him. SKA reduced the difference after Marat Khairullin hit home goalkeeper Andrei Mishurov with a rebound.
At the end of the second period, an unpleasant incident occurred for the St. Petersburgers. Avangard forward Nikita Kholodilin first knocked out Sergei Tolchinsky with a force move, who was subsequently evacuated from the site to the locker room, and then hit Alexander Galchenyuk hard in a fist fight, who tried to get even for his teammate. Moreover, after a long trial, the arbitrators did not find any crime in Kholodilin’s actions against Tolchinsky and issued only a mutual expulsion for fighting. However, SKA managed to achieve success in the four-on-four format. Vasily Glotov, who previously assisted Khairullin, this time scored with his pass.
It’s interesting that just before the break, Boucher had a one-to-one lead, but he didn’t have a couple of seconds to get to the goal.
But in the opening of the third period, everything worked out perfectly for the American. Vladimir Tkachev picked up the rebound from the front board and instantly moved the puck to the far post, where it was guarded by Boucher, who simply could not help but hit the empty target and reached the 40-goal mark. And in the middle of the final period of the match, he scored a double, accurately shooting from the right circle of face-offs in the power play. In that episode, Moisevich was also injured, so SKA had to make a reverse goalie substitution. But Serebryakov, apparently, completely cooled down on the bench and missed a curious puck from the center of the field after setting up Igumnov.
Already in the 53rd minute, the guests used a sixth field player instead of the goalkeeper, and Ivan Nikolishin hit the unprotected goal. Nevertheless, even with the score 3:7, the army team continued to fight and pulled back two goals. However, it all ended with the enraged Boucher scoring a hat-trick when the Omsk team again had a numerical advantage, and Mark Verba set the final result when the St. Petersburg team removed the goalkeeper again – 9:5.
Thanks to this victory, Avangard was ahead of SKA in the overall table with 84 points. The leadership is retained by Metallurg, which, having prevailed over Admiral – 5:1, scored 86 points.
