President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov said that the organization supports athletes for whom participation in the Olympic Games under the terms of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is unacceptable. However, he stressed that Russian athletes must decide to participate independently.
“It must be directly noted that the Russian Olympic Committee is on the side of those of our compatriots among the athletes who consciously choose the other side of the “barricades” and dividing lines that Lausanne has persistently erected since February 2022. For whom the IOC conditions are unacceptable, neither in essence nor in form,” Mr. Pozdnyakov wrote in his Telegram-channel.
He noted that there is no consensus on the ROC regarding the participation of Russian athletes in the Olympic Games in Paris on the terms of the IOC. The head of the organization emphasized that athletes must make the decision to participate themselves.
On December 8, 2023, the IOC allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris, but established requirements for athletes – they will have to compete as neutral athletes without a flag and anthem.
After the approval of such rules, several Russian sports federations immediately refused to participate in the Summer Olympics, in particular the federations supervising boxing, artistic gymnastics, diving, rowing and archery.
