Director of Research at the Commissariat for Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Sources of France, Eben Klein, decided to raffle subscribers on social networks.
He published enlarged photograph of a piece of chorizo sausage and stated that it was actually a photograph of the disk of Proxima Centauri taken by the James Webb space observatory. To his surprise, this post was sent out by more than a thousand users.
The scientist admitted that he wanted to show in this way how fast unverified information spreads across social networks.
Klein apologized to the victims of his deception, but emphasized that information should always be treated critically and not blindly trusted by authorities in any field.
The physicist thought that people would immediately notice the fake, but even journalists from major French TV channels published his photo.
