More than 20 SPbU teachers signed a collective letter to Rector Nikolai Kropachev, expressing their disagreement with the dismissal of their colleague. Earlier, the university terminated the contract with Denis Skopin, an associate professor at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, who received 10 days of arrest for participating in an action against partial mobilization. The dismissal order stated that the teacher had committed an “immoral act.” Mr. Skopin himself intends to appeal the dismissal.

The document was signed by Vice-Rector for Human Resources Vladimir Eremeev.

Professor of the European University Ivan Kurilla published in social networks a copy of the order with a commentary by Mr. Skopin. “I believe that by participating in the rally against mobilization, I was fulfilling my moral duty as a person, citizen and teacher of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences,” Denis Skopin wrote on the document. The teacher added that he did not agree with the vice-rector’s decision and would appeal it to the labor inspectorate. His colleague in the department, Dmitry Panchenko, turned to the electronic reception of St. Petersburg State University, where he asked for an explanation of the legal and ethical grounds for the order. “The statement contained in the order that “the fact that Skopin committed an immoral offense was established” seems to me unfounded,” he wrote. And he added that the dismissal of employees on the basis of a personal judgment about the morality or immorality of this or that act is not within the powers of the vice-rector. Mr. Panchenko has not yet received a response to his appeal.
The student council of the faculty published a statement that “I don’t want to say goodbye” to the teacher. “He said that he was going to file an appeal, in which we want to assist him. Be ready to help when needed,” the council said to the students.
