Archpriest Leonid Kalinin, banned from service because of the Trinity, was hospitalized – Kommersant

Archpriest Leonid Kalinin, whom on May 27 the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) banned in the ministry, was hospitalized with a heart attack, the BBC Russian Service reports, citing sources close to his father. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, dismissed the 54-year-old archpriest from his posts due to “obstruction of bringing” the icon of the Holy Trinity by Andrey Rublev to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

“He is on a drip, his heart is bad,” a source told the BBC. At the same time, the archpriest himself refused to comment on information about his health to the media.

May 15 Russian Orthodox Church announcedthat President Vladimir Putin decided to return the Holy Trinity Church, which was located in the Tretyakov Gallery. Leonid Kalinin, who in the past headed the expert council on church art and the restoration of the Russian Orthodox Church, supported art historians who feared for the safety of the icon during its transportation. He suggested, in particular, creating a special protective capsule so that the icon would not be damaged.

Commenting on the decision of Patriarch Kirill to remove him from office, Leonid Kalinin saidthat, “apparently, he made some kind of mistake.” However, he considered this decision thoughtful. His further activity, he said, depends on the decisions of the patriarch.
