Apple restricts AirDrop to protect against receiving unwanted files

Apple will limit its AirDrop wireless file transfer technology in 2023 to protect Apple device owners from receiving unwanted files, reports Bloomberg.
According to the editor of the publication Mark Gurman, the restrictions appeared already in the update of the iOS operating system released in November 2022. The new version of iOS 16.1.1 limits the time for receiving files from people who are not in the user’s contact list to ten minutes, whereas before there was no such limit. After the specified period, the function automatically switches to a mode in which files can only be received from contacts.
The innovations primarily affected Apple users in China, where the AirDrop feature was used by protesters to distribute anti-government posters and leaflets against Chinese President Xi Jinping. Apple has not officially commented on the introduction of new restrictions specifically in China, but has promised to add a similar 10-minute limit for AirDrop users around the world in 2023.
Recall that the AirDrop function, which allows you to use a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection to exchange images, videos or documents between Apple devices, was introduced in 2011. AirDrop is currently supported by iPhones, iPads, iPods, as well as MacBooks, Macs, and iMacs.
