“Uncle Vanya” was first staged at the Art Theater in 1899. The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater received it thanks to an almost accidental coincidence. The play was supposed to be staged at the Maly Theatre, but it was not approved by the Literary and Theater Committee, which found many shortcomings and lengths in the work, which the author was asked to correct … The performance was played until 1928. For thirty years she has been with constant success! In 1947, the play was staged by Mikhail Kedrov (with the participation of Ilya Sudakov and Nina Litovtseva). And the next premiere of “Uncle Vanya” took place in 1985, directed by Oleg Yefremov. The performance of Mindaus Karbauskis, who represented the Theater on the stage of the Moscow Art Theater under the direction of Oleg Tabakov, was also successful.
Director Denis Azarov says: “Uncle Vanya” is a story about loneliness. Deep, global, mental loneliness. In all of Chekhov’s plays, and in Uncle Vanya in particular, people say things they don’t want to say, they don’t live where they dream, they don’t do what they want to do. It would seem that everything can be changed, for example, just take a ticket and go to another city, but the fear of change immobilizes.
This is a play about an unrequited feeling – all the key characters in the play love not those who love them. Their love is hopeless. At the same time, in addition to the main characters, several more characters will be present on the stage. These are ordinary people, workers, peasants who are forced to stay in the estate and watch the spiritual throwing of the masters. And between these simple people, that feeling is born that the main characters of the play only dream of.
