Alphabet settles case of illegal surveillance of US users – Kommersant

Alphabet managed to reach an out-of-court settlement with a group of plaintiffs who accused the corporation of illegal surveillance of users, reports Reuters.
The lawsuit was filed against the company back in mid-2020 in California. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, was accused of violating federal wiretapping laws and state privacy laws. In particular, the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner accused the corporation of continuing to collect data on user activity on the Internet, even after users entered “incognito” mode in the Google Chrome browser. The corporation achieved this allegedly using Google Firebase software.
The plaintiffs demanded compensation payments from the company of at least $5 billion. The parties came to a preliminary agreement, the details of which must be disclosed by the court no later than February 24, 2024. It is not known how much Google will ultimately pay the plaintiffs.
