Due to heavy snowfall and high humidity last winter, trees will produce a lot of pollen this season. This can lead to so-called pollen storms, said Natalya Ilyina, head physician of the Institute of Immunology of the FMBA of Russia, first vice-president, general director of the Russian Association of Allergists and Clinical Immunologists.
“Given such snow cover and a lot of moisture, it is assumed that the trees will dust quite actively and there will be a lot of pollen. These are what we sometimes call pollen storms. When the number of pollen grains per cubic meter exceeds all so-called possible norms,” she said at a press conference at the MIC “News”.
Ms. Ilyina added that the peak of dust usually takes about 14 days. During this time, it may rain or the wind direction may change. This will help reduce pollen activity in the air and make the flowering period easier for allergy sufferers.
The doctor also reminded that allergies cannot be cured, but they can be controlled using allergen-specific immunotherapy. This is a preventive treatment method when small doses of the exact allergen to which he reacts are injected into the body of an allergic person. Therapy helps reduce sensitivity to the allergen.
