Volley rain last night caused flooding of the Sochi microdistrict Matsesta. Water entered several adjacent territories, a mudflow descended on one of the roads, and trees that fell during a downpour damaged the gas pipeline and cut off power lines. The emergency services of the city of Sochi are carrying out restoration work, and drinking water is being brought to the microdistrict. In the next two days, heavy showers with thunderstorms are expected in Sochi again, all the beaches of the resort city are closed.

On Wednesday, at about four o’clock in the morning, residents of the Sochi microdistrict Matsesta were awakened by the sounds of sirens. So emergency services warned them about a possible evacuation due to the spill of the Matsesta River. The water level in the river passed the critical level after a volley of downpour, which hit the resort town at night: at least 15 mm of precipitation fell in an hour. Fortunately, the evacuation of residents was not needed: the rising water entered the yards on Izmailovskaya Street, in Mostovoy and Lechebny lanes, as well as in the Matsesta SNT.

Infrastructure facilities were under attack: trees that fell during a downpour damaged a gas pipeline and cut off power lines. In the Matsesta microdistrict, the villages of Krasnaya Volya, Illarionovka and Kalinovoe Ozero, power outages were noted, and water supply was partially disconnected. Mudflow descended on the road leading to the village of Izmailovka; the water flooded several more sections of local roads, which caused disruptions in the movement of urban and suburban public transport routes. Traffic on federal highways within the borders of Sochi is carried out in a regular mode.

The emergency services of the city of Sochi and the forces of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia are busy eliminating the consequences of the disaster, the city administration reports. Restoration work is carried out by more than 200 emergency services, 46 units of special equipment are involved. Water supply has been organized to the affected territories, fallen trees are being cleaned, repair work has begun on gas pipelines and power lines. City officials promise that Matsesta’s water supply will be restored by the end of the day. Employees of the Sochi administration began house-to-house rounds to assess the damage caused by flooding.

For graduates of Sochi schools who, due to disruptions in traffic, could be late for passing the exam, transportation to a school in the Svetlana microdistrict was organized. Vacationers who take baths in the balneological complex “Matsesta” are recommended to reschedule the procedures.

A storm warning continues to operate in Sochi, during June 14 and 15, heavy precipitation is expected in different parts of the city. All Sochi beaches are closed for swimming, Sochi residents and guests are advised to refrain from relaxing near the water.
