Onishchenko said that the Alaskapox virus requires monitoring
Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education Gennady Onishchenko said that the Alaskapox virus, a “close relative” of human smallpox, requires constant monitoring to prevent its spread. According to the Alaska Department of Health, an elderly man died from the virus on the Kenai Peninsula in the United States. It is assumed that the source of infection could be the cat with whom he lived, especially given the man’s weakened immunity due to cancer treatment, Rospotrebnadzor reported.
Onishchenko noted that the alascapox virus was detected in five people in 2015 who recovered, but the last case resulted in the death of the patient. This demonstrates the virus’s ability to cross species barriers and spread from wildlife to humans. To prevent the spread of this disease, it is necessary to carefully monitor Alaskapox, Onishchenko explained.
