The head of the Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said that Ukraine would not be able to block the flow of water through the North Crimean Canal to stop the water supply to the peninsula. According to him, over the past year, bypass channels have been built and other measures have been taken to minimize the consequences of the destruction of the dam.
“Measures have been taken in case something happens to the dam in terms of shelling. These are bypass channels, work has been done, and nothing threatens Crimea in terms of flow rate and wave height, even if some situation happens, ”Sergey Aksenov told reporters (quoted from TASS).
According to him, “from the point of view of water” Ukraine will not be able to cut off the water supply. Mr. Aksenov added that now there is no threat of water loss, its level will not fall. “I don’t see any risks for land reclamation, everything is according to plan,” he added.
After the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014, Ukraine cut off the water supply to the peninsula from the Kherson region through the North Crimean Canal. The canal provided up to 90% of the peninsula’s water needs. In February 2022, during military operations, the Russian army destroyed dam blocking the canal. Since March 2022, Crimea has again become supply water through the North Crimean Canal.
