Academician Mikhail Marov, who was at the origins of the Soviet program for the study of the Moon and planets, has passed away. This was announced by the scientific director of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences Lev Zeleny.
“Mikhail Yakovlevich died at six in the morning,” he said.
The physicist noted that Marov had been ill recently, but “had time to say goodbye,” celebrated his anniversary and, despite his health problems, “did excellent one-and-a-half-hour reports.”
The scientist died at the age of 90.
Marov was considered the “scientific director of USSR space missions.” At the end of the summer of 2023, when the domestic Luna-25 spacecraft failed, the academician was hospitalized. The astronomer considered lunar expeditions his life’s work.
