Mortality among homeless people increased by 12% year-on-year in 2022 – Kommersant

In 2022, almost 40 thousand deaths of homeless people were recorded – this is the conclusion reached by the charitable organization Nochlezhka, having studied Rosstat data for 182 large cities from all regions of Russia. According to them, overall mortality at the end of last year decreased by almost a quarter compared to 2021 data, while mortality among homeless people increased by 12%. The organization notes that the recorded mortality rate for homeless people is comparable to the population of the city of Torzhok in the Tver region.
A sharp surge in mortality was recorded in Moscow. In 2022, 5,915 homeless people died in the Russian capital, which is twice as many as in 2021. The mortality rate in 2022 exceeded the results of the pandemic year 2020, the organization emphasized.
The average percentage of homeless deaths from total mortality in Russia is 4.4%. The highest proportion of homeless deaths from total mortality was noted in Simferopol (14.5%), Magadan (13.8%) and Domodedovo near Moscow (12.8%). In Podolsk, Lyubertsy, Krasnogorsk, Pushkin, Ramenskoye, Bratsk, Irkutsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Seversk, Tomsk, this share is above 10%.
According to Nochlezhka’s previous research, the experience of homeless life have 20% of Russians are over 18 years old. Most often, people lose their housing due to the activities of fraudsters (67%), conflict in the family (48%), and due to release from prison (45%). Refugees from conflict zones account for 44%.
