The head of the Gamaleya Center, Alexander Ginzburg, said that the Sputnik V vaccine effectively protected against the COVID-19 coronavirus for about two years from the date of registration, until approximately July 2022.

Since mid-summer 2022, the effectiveness of the vaccine decreased eightfold, then twentyfold, and in January 2023 it stopped protecting completely, since by that time the antigenic composition of the vaccine had to be completely changed, reports “Gazeta.Ru“.

A new vaccine is already being created, Gunzburg emphasized. Clinical trials of the updated Sputnik are scheduled to be completed on December 10.

In order to introduce the vaccine into civilian circulation, according to Federal Law 61, it will be necessary to develop batches and test them. Thus, according to the head of the Gamaleya Center, it will go into circulation by March 2024. Gunzburg agreed that by then its effectiveness may decline, and called the need for new rules in this regard a lesson from the pandemic.
