A tiger cub found on a highway in the Khabarovsk Territory is recovering

In November, a tiger cub with injuries to its paws was found on a highway in the Khabarovsk Territory. He was operated on and is now recovering. Governor Mikhail Degtyarev said that a nickname was being chosen for him. The little tiger cub was spotted by drivers on the highway near the village of Voznesenskoye, Amur District, on November 7. When drivers honked their car horns, the tiger cub tried to run away, but limped due to damaged paws. Witnesses saved him – he was stressed and freezing. The tiger cub was taken to a veterinary hospital in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, where a non-displaced fracture of the left humerus was discovered. In Khabarovsk, they carried out further examination and discovered several more injuries, after which they operated on the humerus to heal. The head of the region said that the tiger cub had a fracture of two paws.

“The tiger cub is recovering. He will no longer be able to return to the wild world. After recovery, he will be transferred to one of the zoos… Currently, the tiger cub is undergoing rehabilitation at the hunting control in the village of Sosnovka. It’s time to give him a name,” Degtyarev wrote in on your Telegram channel.

The head of the region also held a vote on his channel. People are invited to choose a name for the tiger cub from five options: Cupid, Arseny, Velkhat, Vasily and Erofey. After counting 1162 votes, the nickname “Velvet” is in the lead with 39%. In second place is “Erofey” (19%), and in third place is “Amur” (17%).

As Sergei Aramilev, general director of the Amur Tiger Center, previously reported, if the tigress was not near the found baby, this does not mean that she died. Perhaps she left with a healthy tiger cub, leaving the injured one. Due to snowfall, it was not possible to find traces of the tiger cub’s mother at the discovery site. However, the fate of the tigress is causing concern among experts. It is not yet known how the tiger cub ended up in this condition, although one version is that it was hit by a car.

There are about 750 Amur (Ussuri) tigers in Russia, which are included in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Russian Federation. In recent years, the population has increased by approximately 150 individuals. These predators live in four regions of Russia: Primorsky and Khabarovsk territories, Amur and Jewish Autonomous Regions.
