The Leninsky District Court of Perm extended the detention period of the former director of the local Center for Historical Memory, Alexander Chernyshov, until December 10. The FSB investigative authorities accuse him of attempting to smuggle part of the archives of the local branch of Memorial (the organization was included in the register of foreign agents, liquidated by a court decision) to Germany.

According to investigators, the documents contained in the archive are of cultural value. Mr. Chernyshov was detained in Sheremetyevo, from where he wanted to fly to Turkey on May 5. First, the court sent him under administrative arrest for allegedly using obscene language in a public place, and then Alexander Chernyshov was detained as part of a criminal case.

On May 22, the court authorized his detention, which was extended in the summer. The investigator justified her next petition by the fact that the accused tried to escape, while at large, he could escape again and hinder the investigation, which has not yet been completed.

Alexander Chernyshov himself and his defender, lawyer Anastasia Shardakova, were against granting the petition and proposed house arrest as an alternative. During the trial, the accused’s brother was interrogated, who stated that he was ready to help Mr. Chernyshov, including financially. Mrs. Shardakova did not agree with the investigators’ arguments that her client tried to escape. She noted that the human rights activist was removed from the flight on May 5, and a criminal case was opened only five days later. Moreover, Mr. Chernyshov is cooperating with the investigation, and his international passport is “virtually lost.” The lawyer added that in the pre-trial detention center he was deprived of the necessary medical care: Alexander Chernyshov twice wrote applications for the opportunity to visit doctors, but there was no reaction from the administration of the detention center.

As a result, the court left Mr. Chernyshov in pre-trial detention.
