On the occasion of a significant anniversary for our country – the 80th anniversary of the victorious end of the Battle of Stalingrad, a monument was opened in Tambov to one of its heroes, Major General Vasily Andreevich Glazkov.

The solemn opening ceremony of the new monument was held in the Tambov Victory Park.

A native of the Tambov region, Major General Glazkov, in the most difficult days of the Battle of Stalingrad, commanded the soldiers of the 35th Guards Rifle Division, who heroically defended Stalingrad.

The division commander himself showed courage and fearlessness, on September 8, 1942, Vasily Andreevich was seriously wounded. From loss of blood, he often lost consciousness, but did not leave the battlefield, continuing to lead his regiments. When the general was completely exhausted, the soldiers in their arms carried him into a car to evacuate him to a safe place. However, this was not possible. A shell hit the car, the commander died.

On September 23, 1943, Major General was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin. His overcoat, which received 160 bullet and shrapnel holes in battle, is stored in the Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

The monument to Vasily Andreevich Glazkov was erected by the Russian Military Historical Society with the support of the Government of the Tambov Region. The author of the project of the monument is Rostislav Medinsky, the sculptor is Denis Stritovich.

The opening of this monument was attended by the Governor of the Tambov Region Maxim Egorov, the Chairman of the Tambov Regional Duma Evgeny Matushkin, the head of the administration of the city of Tambov Maxim Kosenkov, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and, of course, the creators of the monument themselves.

– Vasily Glazkov is an example of perseverance and dedication. By installing such monuments and memorials, we return the bright memory of our soldiers so that as many young people as possible know about their exploits, – said the head of the region Maxim Yegorov at the ceremony.

Earlier in the same place, in the Tambov Victory Park of the RVIO, busts of several natives of the Tambov region, awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, were installed: I.G. Drachenko, V.I. Shchelkunova, S.N. Perekalsky.
