A court in Moscow sentenced Pyotr Verzilov in absentia to 8.5 years in prison – Kommersant

The Basmanny Court of Moscow sentenced in absentia one of the founders of the Pussy Riot group, former publisher of Mediazona (recognized as a foreign agent) Pyotr Verzilov (recognized as a foreign agent) to 8.5 years in prison in a criminal case for disseminating false information about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (clause “ d” part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), reports TASS.
Also, according to the court verdict, Pyotr Verzilov was prohibited from administering Internet sites for four years. During the debate between the parties, the prosecutor asked to sentence Pyotr Verzilov to nine years in prison. Now Verzilov lives abroad and often visits Ukraine.
The fact that Pyotr Verzilov became a defendant in a criminal case under an article about military fakes became known in November 2022. In January 2023, he said that he was charged because of two tweets and two posts on Instagram (belonging to the extremist Meta, banned in the Russian Federation), in which Pyotr Verzilov spoke about the events in Bucha.
The ICR considered that Pyotr Verzilov “created a real threat to the formation of a false opinion among citizens about the goals and objectives of a special military operation,” and his posts could “lead to an unreasonable increase in social tension” and thereby “harm the interests” of Russia.
In March 2022, Pyotr Verzilov was in absentia arrested. According to investigators, he is hiding in the Vatican and Italy. Also, another criminal case is being investigated against Verzilov under the article of failure to notify of a second citizenship (he has a Canadian passport).
