Cardiologist Shlyakhto explained how swimming in an ice hole can be dangerous

Almazov Ministry of Health of Russia Evgeniy Shlyakhto, in a conversation with journalists, urged citizens to pay close attention to their health before plunging into an ice hole on the Day of Epiphany.
The specialist recalled that the body’s reaction to hypothermia may be unpredictable, and as a result, chronic diseases may worsen. In this regard, after Epiphany the number of requests for medical help increases.
“This is due to a possible unpredictable reaction of the body to hypothermia, especially after a diet violation and a decrease in physical activity during the New Year holidays,” Shlyakhto said.
He noted that a sharp change in temperature can provoke vascular spasm, which can lead to complications such as acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and severe heart rhythm disturbances.
“To reduce the risk of complications, it is important to be prepared… Be sure to measure your blood pressure and also take medications with you,” the expert added.
