Svetlana Zhurova. – Because all of them, except tennis players and golfers, one way or another received government funding for their preparation for the Olympic Games.

One of the obstacles in the selection of our candidates for the Olympic Games was state funding for athletes; this is not a question about the SVO. The only ones who passed this criterion were six athletes from two sports. We have only two sports federations that do not receive state support, because the budget cannot pay for commercial competitions – tennis and golf. All other disciplines are amateur competitions, so at the World Championships, training camps and competitions are paid from the budget.

– How did State Duma deputies react to the IOC’s decision to admit only six athletes from Russia to the Olympics?

– It’s calm for now. Now six athletes have been admitted without the flag and anthem. Imagine, three months later we sign a peace agreement with Ukraine and the flag and anthem are returned to us. None of these six athletes have decided to go to the Olympic Games; they still have time to do so. Let’s not put them in formation on Red Square and ask “will you go to the Olympics or not”? Firstly, conditions may actually change and they may be forced to sign something, but they will not agree. Let’s wait until June.

And our president said that he would analyze this situation – he is absolutely right, we need to take a balanced approach to the issue, and not try to drive athletes into a corner.
