It’s not beer that kills people, but its name
The brewery in the south of the Zhytomyr region announced on its page on the social network its decisive refusal to continue to produce the sort of foamy drink loved by everyone. The producers specifically emphasized that the name of the beer is “connected with the Soviet-Russian past”: “… This product has no place on the shelves of our stores. And yes, we had to take this step a long time ago, but many technical nuances interfered … “
The brewery promised to publish the new name of the Berdichev beer variety later. On this occasion, the Ukrainian media burst into a revelation regarding the real origin of that very beer. It, they say, arrived in Samara at the very beginning of 1890 from Austria and was originally known as “Viennese”. Alfred von Vakano, who leased a plot of land in the Russian province for a period of 99 years, intended to provide the entire empire with this most traditional Austrian drink.
In 1918 the plant was nationalized by the Bolsheviks. The rapidly accelerating production stopped for 5 long years. It was only in 1923 that the “Nepman” Wakano family was kindly allowed to rent their own factory. According to the new-old recipe approved by GOST, the bourgeois name “Vienna” was replaced by the patriotic “Zhigulevskoye”.
