Suzdaltsev: The West will not be satisfied with Zelensky’s desire to remain in power without elections
Andrei Suzdaltsev, associate professor at the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the Higher School of Economics, expressed the opinion that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky would like to refer to martial law and continue to remain in power in the format of not an elected, but “inherited president.”
However, the expert believes, the West is not happy with this, since the West initially positioned this conflict as a confrontation between democracy and “authoritarian” Russia.
Suzdaltsev also noted that Zelensky remains a legitimate leader for now. But if he does not go to the polls, then US congressmen and senators who advocate stopping aid to Ukraine will be able to use this as an argument.
The expert added that top officials of some Western states may publicly call on Zelensky to hold elections and he will probably be forced to agree under this pressure. At the same time, Suzdaltsev emphasized, if there is fraud in the elections, this could lead to local riots.
