Zelensky says Russia wants talks for a breather in hostilities

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Russia, speaking about possible negotiations with Kyiv, allegedly does not seek peace, but only wants to achieve a “short-term lull” in hostilities.
According to Zelensky, Moscow needs a pause to recuperate. “But such a pause will only aggravate the situation,” Zelensky argues during an online speech at an international security forum in Halifax, Canada. His post was published in Telegram-channel.
The Ukrainian leader added that territorial concessions, as well as concessions to the country’s sovereignty, do not guarantee peace, and “immoral” compromises will lead to new victims.
Meanwhile, Steven Mnuchin, who was US Secretary of the Treasury in the administration of Donald Trump, announced the need to start a negotiation process on Ukraine. In his opinion, the issue is already “long overdue”.
After Western media reports about Ukraine’s prompting for a dialogue with Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the possibility of negotiations with Moscow, however, subject to the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and compensation for losses. Prior to this, the Kyiv authorities at the legislative level banned negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Zelensky repeatedly stated that he would not conduct them. In Russia, they replied that the Russian Federation remains open to negotiations, without putting forward any preconditions.
