President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky sarcastically responded at a press conference in Denmark with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to the question of whether Kyiv is ready for compromises on territories for the sake of joining NATO. His speech was broadcast by Ukrainian TV channels.
“We are ready to exchange Belgorod for Ukraine’s NATO membership,” Zelensky said.
Recall that the topic of ceding part of the territory of Ukraine to Russia for the sake of NATO membership arose after the relevant statements by the head of the office of the Secretary General of the alliance, Stian Jenssen. He later admitted that he shouldn’t have spoken in that vein. In Kyiv, this option was also rejected.
As for Belgorod, a number of politicians in Kiev stated that Ukraine could lay claim to the Russian Belgorod region, since Ukrainians began to settle in these lands in the 17th century during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich.
