Francophone media reported that thousands of people took to the streets of Niamey, Niger’s capital, on Sunday to show their support for the military that came to power in the country after a coup in July.
The rally participants chanted slogans such as “No to sanctions!”, “Down with France!”, “Stop military intervention!”, “Ready to die for the motherland.” They held the flags of Niger and walked with them through the central streets of the city.
The day before, General Abdurakhman Tchiani, the head of the putschists, addressed his fellow citizens. In a televised address, he promised to return power to the civil authorities no later than 3 years.
The coup in Niger took place on July 26, when part of the fighters of the presidential guard opposed President Mohamed Bazum. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the country supported the rebels.
