The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Valery Zaluzhny, commented on Monday, November 6, on the death of his assistant Gennady Chastyakov. The major, according to Zaluzhny, died in the explosion of the gift.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported in his Telegram channel that Chastyakov celebrated his birthday with his family. An unknown explosive device went off in one of the gifts. The causes and circumstances of the incident will be established during the judicial investigation, Zaluzhny promised.

Chastyakov is survived by his wife and four children, said the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He called the deceased assistant a reliable shoulder, who completely devoted his life to “the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the fight against Russian aggression.”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine previously confirmed Chastyakov’s death in the explosion. It was also reported that his 13-year-old son was seriously injured and was hospitalized.

At the same time, the speaker of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Maryana Reva, voiced the version of careless handling of ammunition.
