Zakharova reminded Grossi about the dangers of depleted uranium ammunition

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova reminded the head of the IAEA Rafael Grossi about the danger of ammunition with depleted uranium for humans and the environment.

Grossi previously stated that there were no serious radiological consequences from the use of depleted uranium ammunition. The United States is going to supply them to Ukraine.

The diplomat agreed with Grossi that from a “nuclear safety” point of view there are no significant radiological consequences. “He’s just clearly not saying enough,” Zakharova pointed out, calling such “voluntary or involuntary silencing” of the problem unacceptable. Depleted uranium as a heavy metal, as explained by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, is dangerous to humans and the environment from the point of view of chemical toxicity. “Especially in ammunition,” she emphasized. “Because their use creates toxic aerosols.”

Grossi, as Zakharova noted, did not mention the heating and possible ignition of the depleted uranium rod when penetrating the armor. “The lining of a cumulative projectile made of depleted uranium behaves even worse,” the Russian diplomat also pointed out.
