The calls of Latvian President Egils Levits to isolate Russians disloyal to the authorities violate all generally accepted moral, ethical and humanitarian norms, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
“Such absurd, discriminatory initiatives that affect the interests of almost half of the population of Latvia and run counter to the numerous recommendations of relevant international structures have long become a shameful practice,” quotes Zakharov, the press service of the Foreign Ministry.
According to the diplomat, the Latvian authorities prefer to impose on the population the “two-community path”, which leads to a further split and increased tension in society against the backdrop of worsening problems in the socio-economic sphere. “Unfortunately, the European “democratic” structures are bashfully silent,” she stressed.
On August 24, Levits announced the need to isolate part of the Russian-speaking society disloyal to the state. According to the head of state, both positive and negative phenomena appeared in Latvian society after the start of the special operation in Ukraine. As positive, Levits considered the fact that most of the republic’s society became more patriotic and began to “better aware of their country and the price of freedom”, negative – a “part of Russian society disloyal to the state” appeared in the country.
On August 11, the Saeima of Latvia recognized Russia as a country supporting terrorism. According to the Latvian authorities, Russia was involved in the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in 2018 and the crash of the Boeing MH17 in 2014.
