Guitars in force and Irish presence at the opening of Rock en Seine

Like so many other festivals, Rock en Seine, organized since its creation in 2003, on the lower part of the national domain of Saint-Cloud (Hauts-de-Seine), could not take place in 2020 and in 2021 in due to health restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic. To mark its return and its place among the big summer festivals with capacities of tens of thousands of people, it was added a day to its usual three-day format (inaugurated in 2007).
The musical weekend therefore began on Thursday August 25 and will end on Sunday August 28. Festival officials had even planned a fifth meeting, Tuesday August 30, with the American group Rage Against the Machine headlining, removed at the last minute. Health problems of the singer Zack de la Rocha have, in fact, forced the group to announce, in mid-August, the cancellation of its European tour and therefore its passage to Rock en Seine.
It is with the English of Yard Act, a group born in Leeds in 2019, and those of Idles, formed in Bristol in 2009, that we have been best served
For this opening day – with Arctic Monkeys at the end of the evening for a framed show, the fervor of the public and a new song as the announcement of a seventh album, scheduled for the end of October – the electric guitar is in good place within the most of the groups, about fifteen spread over five stages. It is with the English of Yard Act, a group born in Leeds in 2019, and those ofIdles, formed in Bristol in 2009, that one has been best served. If, within Yard Act, which plays on the stage of the Cascade, the singer James Smith evolves in a way of spoken-sung well controlled, the guitarist Sam Shipstone brings stridency and cutting interventions to pieces which are started in a disorder distorted sounds, and end abruptly.
With Idles, on the Main Stage, where singer Joe Talbot always impresses with his expressive force, guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan draw from their instruments sounds that owe as much to the hardest rock as to psychedelic whirlwinds, with effect Larsen, strikes on the strings, rumbles…

Another event of this inaugural Thursday, the presence of three Irish formations. Here and there, like support from their compatriots who came to the festival, the green, white and orange flag is waved – and even covers the keyboard of the band Inhaler. The youngest and newest – the band was formed in Galway in 2020 – are NewDad’s four, almost fresh out of high school. Julie Dawson (vocals and rhythm guitar), Sean O’Dowd (lead guitar), Aindle O’Beirn (bass) and Fiachra Parslow (drums) are on the small Firestone stage, named after the tire company. Delighted, smiling, full of musical joy, a few clumsiness, a pop spirit that nourishes well-constructed songs.
