Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on a Wall Street Journal report citing American officials that the United States was ready to consider a scheme to exchange journalist Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan for several Russians suspected of hacking.
According to Zakharova, such speculations regularly appear in the American media. The diplomat noted that this is happening “exclusively for domestic political reasons in Washington.”
Zakharova added that Washington is not concerned with human destinies, but with earning political points.
The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry urged the American side, instead of whipping up unnecessary hype, “in matters of possible exchanges, focus on non-public professional dialogue.” She also advised using a special channel for this, which was determined in 2021 by the presidents of Russia and the United States.
Zakharova recalled that thanks to such “quiet diplomacy”, the exchanges of Konstantin Yaroshenko and Viktor Bout for American citizens Trevor Reed and Brittney Griner have already taken place.
