The United States could miss the opportunity for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, reported Politico newspaper, citing an unnamed US official.

“Perhaps we missed the opportunity to push for earlier talks,” he said.

In this context, the official recalled the words of General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, who in November 2022 proposed considering the possibility of peace talks between Moscow and Kiev.

“Administration officials immediately sought to reassure their counterparts in Kyiv that Millie was joking and not reflecting secret sentiments in the White House,” the newspaper wrote.

According to the interlocutor of the publication, as a result, General Milli was right.

Since the beginning of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the parties have held talks several times in February and March 2022. The first three face-to-face meetings took place in Belarus in February-March, and the fourth round of the Russian-Ukrainian dialogue was held on March 29, 2022 in Istanbul. After that, the process was frozen, since Kyiv withdrew from it. On October 4, 2022, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree refusing to negotiate with Russia as long as Vladimir Putin is its president. At the same time, Moscow has repeatedly stated that it is open to negotiations.
