The widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Yulia, could have come to Russia to see her husband, but chose to stay abroad, the Russian president’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said. Commenting on Yulia Navalnaya’s statement that the politician was killed in a colony, a Kremlin spokesman said: “This is not so.”

“And Putin’s attitude shows his openness. He was really ready to do this (exchange Navalny.— ”b”),” Mr. Peskov told reporters.

Vladimir Putin March 18 told journalists that a few days before the death of Alexei Navalny, he was informed of a proposal to exchange the oppositionist “for some people who are in prison in Western countries.” The president said he agreed to the exchange on the condition that Navalny would not return to Russia. He called the death of the oppositionist a sad event.

Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug reported about the death of Alexei Navalny on February 16. The oppositionist served a 19-year sentence in a special regime colony in Kharp. The medical certificate stated natural causes of death. On March 1, Navalny was buried at the Borisov cemetery in Moscow.
