XVI Congress of the Russian Entomological Society

From August 22 to 26, 2022 at the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University passes XVI Congress of the Russian Entomological Society (REO) – one of the oldest scientific societies in Russia, founded in 1859.
REO congresses, recently held every five years, have been held in various cities of Russia and the former Soviet Union, but this is the first time such an event has taken place in Moscow. The congress is organized by employees, graduate students and students of the Department of Entomology of Moscow State University – the largest Russian center for training professional entomologists. The Russian Entomological Society, which in different years was also called the All-Russian, All-Union and simply Russian, but in 1995 regained its original name, unites entomologists (specialists in insects), as well as arachnologists (specialists in arachnids), collembologists (specialists in springtails) and myriapodologists (specialists in centipedes), mainly working in Russia and neighboring countries.
Insects are the largest group of living organisms in terms of the number of species known to science: more than a million of them have already been described, and no fewer of them are still waiting to be described. There are also quite a few other terrestrial arthropods (such as arachnids, springtails and centipedes), the study of which is traditionally associated with the study of insects: more than one hundred thousand species of them together are already known. Terrestrial arthropods play a huge role in most terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems of the planet and in human life, and their comprehensive study is one of the most urgent tasks of modern biology.
In published by the beginning of the congress collection abstracts reflect the results of the work of several hundred domestic and foreign experts. The opening of the congress and plenary reports will take place in the Large Biological Auditorium of Moscow State University today. From Tuesday to Thursday, meetings of 15 sections of the congress will be held, the topics of which are related to various fields of science about insects and other terrestrial arthropods.
