WWF: Oscar nomination for Exit could play a trick on the walruses of Chukotka

The Oscar nomination of the Russian-British film Exit about the life of Chukchi walruses can “play a cruel joke on the walruses” and attract groups of tourists to Cape Heart-Stone, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). They urged to give the rookery a protected status.
Cape Heart-Stone is located on the northeastern coast of Chukotka, it is the largest walrus rookery in Russia. More than 100 thousand individuals rest on its territory at the same time.
Varvara Levitskaya, coordinator of WWF Arctic biodiversity projects, explained that walruses are very dense on the cape. “Any sudden noise or movement can provoke panic and stampede. Now nothing regulates the actions of people in the rookery, roughly speaking, a few people in cars, ATVs or noisy boats can provoke the death of hundreds of individuals without any malicious intent, ”she told RIA Novosti.
The film “Exit” was shot by brother and sister Maxim and Evgenia Arbugaev in the Chukotka village of Enurmino. The film tells about the marine biologist Maxim Chakilev, who observes the life of walruses at Cape Heart-Stone in the Chukchi Sea.
