WSJ: U.S. looking into closing Guantanamo prison
[ad_1]
The US is stepping up efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. To review the cases of some prisoners, Tina Kaidanov was appointed to the post of special representative for prison affairs. This is written by The Wall Street Journal.
Journalists cite the following data: there are 36 prisoners in Guantanamo, and the maintenance of the prison costs the US government $540 million a year. Many of those who sit in this prison have been awaiting trial for 20 years. They have not been sentenced yet. It is worth considering that the last prisoner was brought to Guantanamo Bay in 2008.
In 2009, Barack Obama signed an order to disband this penitentiary within 12 months. But the prison still exists. Human rights activists criticize Washington for this. However, things are not moving forward.
The new special representative will have to review the cases of all prisoners and release some of them, and transfer some to other prisons. At the same time, according to journalists, the White House does not intend to interfere in the work of Tina Kaidanov.
