Chinese scientists: volcanoes were active on the moon

Chinese scientists believe that volcanoes could have been active on the moon. They came to this conclusion after examining the soil, which was delivered from an artificial satellite by the Chang’e-5 apparatus. The samples showed signs of eruptions of volcanic lava.
A press release from the National Center for Space Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences indicated that the samples contained elements such as uranium, thorium and potassium. And this means that the area where the device landed was flooded with lava more than once.
The scientists also estimated the thickness of the basalt rocks. They believe that this figure indicates four eruptions. The first one was the largest. It was also possible to establish that the rate of basalt eruption in this area increased significantly about 2 billion years ago.
Lunar soil was delivered to Earth in December 2020. In total, the device brought 1731 grams of substances from the surface of a natural satellite of our planet. The samples were taken in the area of the Ocean of Storms.
