The head of the International Association of Athletics Federations (World Athletics), Sebastian Coe, said that the suspension of Russian athletes from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris remains in force, despite today’s decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Previously, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Games as neutral athletes.
“You can see Russian athletes at the Olympic Games in Paris. It just won’t happen in athletics. This position, which our sport has adopted, has not changed in any way,” said Mr. Coe, noting that international federations have the priority right to give their own assessment of the selection of athletes (quote from TASS).
Today, December 8, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Games in a neutral status. At the moment, only 11 Russian and Belarusian athletes have qualified for the Olympics in Paris: 8 Russians and 3 citizens of Belarus.
