Women gained real power only under Putin – Kommersant

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin believes that women only became truly represented in power during the reign of President Vladimir Putin. Previously, gender equality, in his opinion, was decorative.

“Women received political rights in 1918, but they received real power only now, under President Putin and the majority of United Russia. Previously, all this was more for decoration,” the speaker said during a speech in the State Duma (quote from RIA Novosti).

He recalled that women in Russia head the Central Bank, the Federation Council, the Accounts Chamber and the Central Election Commission, and are widely represented in the leadership of legislative bodies. “It’s a real attitude. And before it was all about balancing. Workers, collective farmers, women, men, these decorations will not lead to good things,” said Mr. Volodin. At the same time, according to the speaker, men take on “the most difficult routine work.”
