FT reports harassment of female delegates at UN climate conference
Female delegates at COP27, the 27th UN Climate Change Conference, have faced bullying, abuse and sexual harassment from male delegates, the Financial Times writes, citing its sources.
Camila Zepeda, head of the Mexican delegation, said she herself was sexually harassed at the COP27 conference in Egypt last year and also received inappropriate messages from a male delegate. She did not report it at the time, but decided to speak up now because, she says, women continue to face harassment in UN negotiations.
More than 20 countries wrote a letter of protest urging conference organizers to pay special attention to how negotiators are treated and to create a respectful and safe working environment for all delegates. These countries include Mexico, USA, UK, Germany, Peru and Canada.
The COP27 negotiations dragged on for two days, and the participants agreed to create a fund to help poor countries. Despite this, the negotiation process is undermined by the vested interests of the oil industry, UN Secretary General António Guterres warned.
Climate talks are due to conclude at COP28 in the United Arab Emirates this year. It is noted that the UAE is a country with an economy dependent on oil exports. Topics for discussion at COP28 are discussed in Bonn (Germany). According to the FT, there was also some harassment.
