Why Xiaomi smartphones did not exit reboot mode

The largest glitch in history occurred in the operating system of the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi. Yesterday, thousands of gadget owners in Russia encountered technical problems. The phones would not come out of reboot mode, making them impossible to use. What caused the massive outage? And what consequences can users expect? Alexander Mezentsev will tell you.

A technical error where the phone enters a reboot cycle usually occurs due to physical damage to the device. But on February 29 the problem became widespread. Around noon, Xiaomi smartphones stopped working for Russians.

Apparently, the failure affected approximately half of the gadgets, and, according to MegaFon, phones from this company are now among the three most popular. Muscovite Egor was also unable to turn on his device, but he quickly and radically solved the problem:

“I take my phone out of my pocket, and it constantly reboots and goes into recovery mode. I found out on the Internet that Xiaomi had rolled out a crooked update, and I realized that I had two options: either wait for their bugs to be fixed or completely reset the system to factory settings with data loss. I don’t store anything important on my phone, so I decided to roll back the settings. This solved the problem.”

The system failure also affected phones of Xiaomi’s subsidiary brands – Redmi and Poco. According to experts, the bug was caused by incorrect installation of the HyperOS plugin responsible for the Control Center. Xiaomi presented this shell in October 2023; it is based on Android and should replace the previous MIUI operating system. A couple of hours before the problem occurred, HyperOS was updated again, but unsuccessfully. Now gadget owners will most likely have to say goodbye to their data, says IT expert Kirill Sitnov:

“Such problems can arise if, while downloading updates, problems appeared in the mobile network, and some packages arrived broken. It is possible that certain phone models were affected because they made an error in the firmware code. Under warranty, the smartphone is immediately taken to a service center, and this problem can drag on for almost a month. In the end, everything may still return to the fact that they simply roll back the phone to factory settings.”

As noted by AndroidInsider, the failure occurred specifically on the Russian version of the software interface, which has the prefix “RU”. However, as Kommersant FM found out, complaints also appeared on the American social network Reddit. So far, Xiaomi has only said that they are looking for a solution, but in the near future the company may send customers more detailed instructions, notes ITZine editor-in-chief Sergey Kuznetsov:

“Such massive failures have never happened in history. Typically, a company can send a command to smartphones that are connected to the Internet to fix a bug in a new update. If she doesn’t do this, she says, please contact the official service centers, we sent instructions there, and they will resume the operation of smartphones for free for all users, correcting this bug.

With the new update, everything can be fixed without losing data. A factory reset helps, but I wouldn’t recommend doing it until the company releases an official statement. Yes, you may have to be patient, maybe even for a day or two.”

For Xiaomi customers in Russia, this failure was not the first. In October, the brand’s household appliances connected to the smart home system malfunctioned. Lamps, vacuum cleaners, humidifiers, video cameras and smart sockets were not synchronized with the cloud service for more than a day. They complained about the same problem in Belarus.
