The expert explained why Russian artists sing to a soundtrack

Even virtuoso vocalists resort to tricks. Many famous artists prefer live performance, but do not refuse to use a soundtrack. An expert in the field of show business explained why domestic musicians resort to “plywood”.

It’s easy to find videos online where Russian stars sing “to the tune of plywood.” For example, Philip Kirkorov, the king of Russian pop music, who seems to be the leader in such cases. In 2019, he found himself in an awkward situation while performing at the New Wave in Sochi. During the performance of the song “Atlantis,” the artist did not have time to bring the microphone closer to his lips, but his voice sounded in full swing. There were other examples.

However, Kirkorov is not the only one who uses a soundtrack. According to music critic Evgeny Babichev, almost all domestic stars commit this “sin”. Performances using recordings allow artists to maintain their strength and voice during a busy touring schedule.

“When you perform solo numbers every day during a tour, not a single body can stand it,” the expert notes in a conversation with News.ru.

As it turned out, voice recording is used even by those celebrities who strive to be honest in front of the public. To protect themselves, artists resort to a soundtrack every fifth song. This allows the vocalists to rest a bit. Many artists also perform with pre-recorded backing vocals, appearing on stage and performing a song over existing material.

“This is also a way to lighten the load a little, but this is not deception, but a method to preserve strength and bring the concert to the end one hundred percent,” emphasized Evgeny Babichev.

However, in Russia the issue of banning the performance of songs “under plywood” has been repeatedly raised. The initiators explain this by saying that viewers are actually being deceived into listening to previously recorded compositions. But so far “plywood” is not prohibited at the legislative level.
