WHO calls for cautious use of AI in healthcare

The World Health Organization (WHO) published on its website statement, which calls for the cautious use of AI-generated large language model (LLM) tools in healthcare. This is necessary to protect the well-being, safety, independence of people and public health, according to the organization.
The WHO notes that the rapid spread of platforms such as ChatGPT, Bard and Bert has caused a stir about the potential of neural networks in the field of medicine. We are talking, in particular, about increasing access to medical information, expanding diagnostic capacity, etc.
“While WHO is enthusiastic about the appropriate use of technology, including LLM, to support healthcare professionals, patients and researchers, there is concern that the caution that would normally be exercised with any new technology is not consistently followed with regard to LLM,” says in the statement.
Rushing to implement untested systems can lead to medical errors, harm to patients and undermine confidence in AI, the WHO said.
After OpenAI introduced ChatGPT based on the new GPT-4 language model, more than a thousand IT leaders signed an open letter calling for a moratorium on the development of AI systems within six months. Among the signatories of the letter were the founder of OpenAI, Tesla and SpaceX Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and other entrepreneurs.
