WHO announces global shortage of antibiotics

Due to the growing number of infectious diseases, experts record a shortage of antibiotics in the world. The Financial Times writes about this, citing the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) drug supply group, Lisa Hedman.
Of the 35 countries for which data are collected by WHO, 80% are experiencing a shortage of penicillins. In the US and Canada, for example, they complain about the lack of amoxicillin. The vast majority of EU countries – 25 out of 27 – also reported the problem.
Less is known about the situation in smaller countries, Hedman said. But at the same time, these states may suffer more. Especially if their national currency has depreciated and they have to buy medicines on the open market.
The supply of components for the manufacture of drugs is also complicated. The rise in energy prices has also led to a reduction in the profits of drug manufacturers.
