WHO: About 90% of the world’s population is immune to COVID-19

The World Health Organization estimates that about 90% of the world’s population has developed some form of immunity to COVID-19.
“According to WHO, at least 90% of the world’s population currently has some immunity to SARS-CoV-2 due to infection or vaccination,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference. “We have already taken a huge step towards saying that the acute phase of the pandemic is over, but so far this has not happened. Due to the loss of vigilance, there is still the risk of a new strain of the virus. Gaps in surveillance, testing, sequencing and vaccination create ideal conditions for the emergence of a new strain of coronavirus that could lead to a serious increase in mortality.”
Ghebreyesus noted that last weekend it was exactly one year since the organization announced a strain of COVID-19 called “omicron”. Since then, it has spread widely throughout the world, proving to be significantly more contagious than its predecessor, the delta strain. To date, there are more than 500 sub-strains of “omicron” – all of them are able to overcome the developed immunity more easily, even if they, as a rule, have a less severe course of the disease.
According to WHO statistics, the number of officially confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the world has exceeded 6.6 million out of almost 640 million registered cases of infection. However, the organization believes that this figure is greatly underestimated and that it does not reflect the true state of affairs.
The WHO chief added that more than 8,500 deaths from COVID-19 were recorded last week, which is “absolutely unacceptable three years after the start of the pandemic, given that we have so many tools to prevent the spread of infection and save lives.”
