WhatsApp (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) will stop working on smartphones with an Android operating system (OS) version below 5.0 from October 24. About it reported in the messenger help center.
“Before we stop supporting your operating system, you will receive a notification directly from WhatsApp. We will remind you several times about the need to update,” the help center noted.
Currently the messenger supports Android starting from version 4.1. WhatsApp also works on the iOS 12 operating system and its newer versions and on phones with KaiOS 2.5.0 and higher.
Earlier media reported that WhatsApp decided do not launch Russian-language channels in Russia due to the risk of blocking. The messenger launched the new feature on September 13 in more than 150 countries. After this, Roskomnadzor warned about the possibility of blocking the messenger in the country if it refuses to delete “unfriendly channels.”
