What rarities are found in the waste?

For several years now, huge waste sorting complexes, the Neva and Vostok, have been operating in the Moscow region. There are automated systems here – optical separators separate plastic, magnets catch ferrous metal. But on the long conveyor belt, along which the waste moves, there are also sections that are dismantled manually. And these hands now and then catch very interesting and sometimes unusual things among the waste.

This is how museums began to emerge in the KPO territories. Museum of interesting finds, the museum will take the time that has outlived its time. At KPO Vostok, the museum opened on August 1, 2019 and during this time has collected almost 400 items. In August 2022, a similar museum appeared in the Neva complex, where the exposition is smaller – 25 items.

The largest group of items is antique crockery. Jugs, vases, trays with colorful scenes, including from the mythology of Ancient Greece. One of the remarkable finds was a vintage service from India: a vase and a black jug with a gold floral ornament. It’s handmade, by the way!

Someone decided to give up warm and cozy things: homemade handmade felt boots with a painted bear were removed from the conveyor belt. Judging by their size, the owner of the boots did not differ much in size from the owner of the taiga. Another amazing thing is slippers made of young deer fur, embroidered with beads and sequins, as well as a figurine of a shaman in winter clothes. One can imagine: a man came from the North, brought souvenirs from there, and then … something happened, and these treasures of the national culture of the northern peoples ended up in the capital’s dustbin.

One of the first finds is a pharmacy container. Now it is almost filled to the brim with coins. Coins were also found here: at the sorting of KPO Vostok, they found a whole bag of kopecks made in 2008. Calculated – it turned out 369 rubles. They poured them into a pharmacy container found earlier and exhibited them in the museum. Kopeks are now completely out of use, but once it was a very large coin.

“Large vintage gift set Mirror and scallop Peacock” – under this name in online stores you can still find a bulky but colorful accessory. On the back of the mirror is a peacock with an open tail made of artificial stones, the comb is made in the form of a peacock feather. The mirror broke, it was thrown away – that’s how it ended up in the museum. Waiting for the scallop to join him.

It is completely incomprehensible why the museum turned out to have an excellent helmet for equestrian sports. More precisely, it is not clear why it was thrown out. Could after all serve as another jockey …

Most of the things in the museum are echoes of some sometimes still recent eras. Here, for example, is the geographical atlas of the USSR, released in 1986. It is the size of a palm – a travel option. Now they are no longer used; navigators have replaced such atlases. And then almost all motorists had a similar card in the car.

Interesting collection of watches. One of the first finds was “Spring” – a table clock from the Vladimir factory. Before the Great Patriotic War, the enterprise produced gramophones, during the war – rockets for the famous “Katyusha”, aviation bombs. Later, the production of consumer goods began, including the table clock “Spring” and the wristwatch “Victory”.

But the table clock “Mayak” of the Serdobsky watch factory with a crystal case – they were produced in the 60s of the last century.

Someone did not regret and threw away the heavy watch case of the Ural watch factory “Mistress of the Copper Mountain” – Kasli casting, the heroes of Bazhov’s tale, three kilograms of metal! However, it is clear why they threw it away: there was no mechanism in the watch, and the owners, apparently, did not want to keep the bulky sculpture at home.

The Ural Watch Factory also produced Molniya watches in a wooden case and a bronze-brass frame. He also ended up in the museum: the mechanism was worn out and stopped working, the case was thrown away …

Dior Chinese watches are a 90s fashion screech. With shattered glass and a broken mechanism, a cultural footprint not far in time, but so distant in perception of an era!

However, often on the tape there is a more advanced technique. For example, a pager and an amateur Soviet movie camera. Moreover, the pager turned out to be in excellent working condition – however, who uses them now? Yes, and the service for sending messages to a pager probably no longer exists … But the camera lens did not stand the test.

The museum contains the legendary Zenit-12 SD film camera, which was produced by the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant from 1983 to 1993. It is still of interest to collectors and lovers of rare photography.

A separate category is weapons. Yes, it is also found on the garbage conveyor belt. All such items are first handed over to the security service and carefully checked. So the museum ended up with a helmet of a Soviet soldier, bullets from a 7.62-mm cartridge, a cartridge case from a heavy machine gun, brass cartridges from the Soviet era – they don’t make these now – and even a broken hunting rifle. Probably, Bunny-knowingly threw it away.

The list of recent finds includes an air pistol and a universal smoke bomb, modeled after an anti-tank mine. A worthy place in the exposition is occupied by two gas masks. A respirator of radiation-chemical protection, previously widely used in exercises in the USSR, and a modern gas mask of the Ministry of Emergencies.

And there are four Oscars in the museum! Of course, not real. About ten years ago there was such a fashion: to hand over to the leaders of production, the “fathers of franchising” and the best athletes of enterprises, figures made in imitation of the famous film award. Commemorative inscriptions are made on the pedestals. For example, one “Oscar” was awarded to a “sunny-sparkling person”, and the other to Catherine with a promise to “remember her always.” For some reason, the owners of these awards decided to get rid of them, and now the Oscars are in the KPO Vostok Museum.

Sometimes exhibits demonstrate how carelessly we treat things. For example, in August there were starfalls. And at the end of August, the sorters fished out two spotting scopes from the garbage. What does it turn out – an optical device was bought only in order to look at the stars once? What about the recent solar eclipse? What about a supermoon? But you never know in space there are interesting events!

Here is a military field telephone of the 1957 model – by the way, it is still in service. Although modern devices are gradually replacing it.

It is curious that the inhabitants of the metropolis still throw away cast-iron irons and even … bast shoes!

An interesting museum turns out. Cultural cross-section of eras, flared and faded interests, pointless purchases, unnecessary rewards… There is something to think about, right?
